Registration
All U.S. citizens residing in or visiting Tajikistan are encouraged to register online with the U.S. Embassy Consular section.
Registering upon your arrival greatly facilitates our ability to locate you in the event of an emergency. Registration also allows us to replace your passport quickly if it is lost or stolen, or contact you in case the Embassy or your relatives need to pass you an emergency message.
In the event that your family needs to reach you because of an emergency at home or because they are worried about your welfare, they should call the State Department’s Citizens Emergency Center at (202) 647-5225. The State Department will try to locate you, pass on urgent messages, and, consistent with the Privacy Act, report back to your family. We will release information about you to others only in accordance with your wishes (as stipulated by the U. S. Privacy Act of 1966).
If we do not have a Privacy Act Waiver from you (which is a part of the registration form), we cannot report any information about you to your family.
Please note that registration with the U.S. Embassy Consular Section is separate from registration with the Tajik authorities, which is required for all foreign citizens staying in Tajikistan over three days (for registration with the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs, OVIR or hotels, please see the information below).
TAJIK GOVERNMENT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND REGISTRATION PROCEDURES
A valid passport and visa are required to enter Tajikistan. American citizens can obtain Tajik visas at Tajik embassies and consulates abroad and at Dushanbe airport. Tajik authorities require the name and contact information of the inviting individual or organization in Tajikistan and also the address at which you plan to stay in Tajikistan. You need to have two passport-size photos and your passport should be valid for at least six months longer than the duration of your stay in Tajikistan. Visas issued at Dushanbe airport are normally valid for only one entry up to 45 days. Please note that Tajik visas CANNOT be obtained at any other Tajik airports and at land borders. Failure to produce a valid visa and register with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or OVIR (Ministry of Interior Affairs) within three working days of arrival in Tajikistan may force a traveler to leave the country immediately.
Please note: Entry into Tajikistan along the Gorno-Badakhshan border requires special authorization in advance, in addition to a valid Tajik visa. Tajik authorities consider an attempt to enter Gorno-Badakhshan without the travel authorization to be a violation of the Tajik border-crossing regime, which is punishable with arrest. The travel authorization for Gorno-Badakhshan is written in travelers’ passports ONLY BY THE TAJIK MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS (MFA) OR OVIR (DEPARTMENT OF VISAS AND REGISTRATION) IN DUSHANBE (Tajik embassies and consulates abroad do not have the authority to issue it). Travelers should apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or OVIR for the Gorno-Badakhshan travel authorization at least 14 days in advance. The Tajik MFA or OVIR will list the names of the settlements and cities in Gorno-Badakhshan, which you plan on visiting, in the travel authorization and stamp it. The Gorno-Badakhshan travel authorization is not written on the Tajik visa sticker. It is a separate note written in a passport.
Obtaining a Tajik Visa
At the Dushanbe Airport
If you are arriving in Dushanbe by air, after arrival, you should go to the Tajik Ministry of Foreign Affairs consular office at the airport and present your passport valid for at least six months from the date of your departure from Tajikistan, two passport-size photos and the appropriate fee and fill out two visa application forms provided by the Tajik consular official at the airport.
Once you get your visa you will proceed with passport/immigration control, and then you will be able to pickup your luggage. Please note that there may be lines and delays in getting a visa and you might need to wait for the representative of the Tajik consular office.
At a Tajik Embassy
Visitors from the United States may apply for a visa at Tajik Embassy in Washington, D.C. It is advised to contact the Embassy in advance for information and details.
